Drawing on 1,500 documented cases, The White Whale Report 2026 explores the growing gap between AI deployment and the human capability needed to work with it well. The research reveals a consistent pattern: when technology moves ahead of people, trust, judgement and legitimacy come under pressure. When human capability keeps pace, the story looks very different.

The White Whale maps this journey across five recognisable phases, from quiet experimentation and rapid scaling to employee pushback, social pressure and, eventually, the rebuilding of trust. Most importantly, it identifies the point at which organisations still have the greatest opportunity to shape what happens next.

At the centre of the research is a simple proposition:

Human intelligence must grow alongside artificial intelligence.

That means building the human capabilities AI cannot replace: context, judgement, social understanding, creativity and the ability to remain accountable for the decisions technology helps us make.
